The U.S. election is over and Donald Trump has assumed the office of President. During the whole of the election cycle, President Trump spent a good part of the election defending his decision not to release his tax returns. His consistent explanation for not doing what many candidates before him had done was he financial records and returns were tied up in IRS audits, and he would gladly release them when issues have been resolved.
Based on a recent petition posted on the White House Website, it would seem the liberal left is still determined to get a look at what’s on those returns. Here is what the petition reads:
“The unprecedented economic conflicts of this administration need to be visible to the American people, including any pertinent documentation which can reveal the foreign influences and financial interests which may put Donald Trump in conflict with the emoluments clause of the Constitution.”
According to a White House source, the petition has already secured close to 400,000 signatures. In a country of 320,000,000 people, that may not sound like a lot of activity. However, the number has shattered the record for a petition posted on the website. Folks will remember that the White House has guaranteed a response to any petition that receives crosses the 100,000 signature threshold.
It may seem that President Trump is in bit of a quandary. With that said, it seems very unlikely he is going to actually release hit tax returns at any time in the near future. That was made clear by Trump representative Kellyanne Conway, who stated: “The White House response is that he’s not going to release his tax returns. We litigated this all through the election. People didn’t care. They voted for him.”
This is sure to be a major issue should President Trump decide to run for reelection in 2020.
